Mission
History

Following a preliminary meeting in Korea of interested representatives from Korea, Japan and Singapore in 1989; a formal meeting was convened at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, Hong Kong for the founding of the Asian Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry on 15 January 1990. At that historic meeting chaired by Prof Stephen Wei, the founder officers were unanimously elected with Prof Michio Haga from Japan as founder president of the AAAD. It was also agreed that the Secretariat of the Academy should be based in Singapore. The following are the presidents who have served the Asian

Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry:
1990-1991 Prof Michio Haga (late), Japan
1990-1992 Prof Lee Jae-Hyun, Korea
1992-1994 Prof Takao Maruyama, Japan
1994-1996 Dr Lin Chong Min, Taiwan ROC
1996-1998 Dr Peter Tay, Singapore
1998-2000 Dr Sandesh Mayekar, India
2000-2002 Dr Ko Seok Hoon, Korea
2002-2004 Dr Toru Matsuo, Japan
2004-2006 Dr T C Phua, Singapore
2006-2008 Dr Robert Dharma, Indonesia
2008-2010 Dr Sim Tang Eng, Malaysia
(The current President Elect to assume Presidential office in 2010 is Prof Hisashi Hisamitsu, Japan)

The first Scientific Meeting was held in Singapore on 8 September 1990 just before the FDI Meeting to publicise the existence of the academy. One of our objective was the promotion of education of aesthetic dentistry in Asia and to this end, there has been Biennial Meeting once every two years for scientific meeting at various locations in Asia. Past venues for scientific meetings include:

1990 Singapore
1992 Seoul, Korea
1994 Kagoshima, Japan
1996 Taipei, Taiwan ROC
1998 Singapore
2000 Mumbai, India
2002 Seoul, Korea
2004 Nagoya, Japan
2006 Singapore
2008 Bali, Indonesia

Our current members hail from Asian countries like Japan, Korea, India, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Nepal, Hong Kong and Thailand. At the business meeting held on 21 May 2005 in Bali, Indonesia; the Executive Council rectified the amendment in membership to include institution members to include the various aesthetic dental groups that were formed all over Asia since our inception in 1990. In this way AAAD will continue to serve aesthetic dentistry education through its dual role of a federation for Asian aesthetic dental groups.

AAAD has since 1993 come up with an annual journal publication, Asian Journal of Aesthetic Dentistry that endeavours to cover the entire spectrum of dental aesthetics. The journal is particularly indebted to Prof Lui Joo Loon of Malaysia for serving as Editor from 1993-2004.

Overview

About Us

It is indeed an honour and privilege for me to write this message for the launch of the anxiously anticipated AAAD website. This website should serve us well, especially when AAAD is an umbrella body of so many national aesthetic dentistry academies/associations in the Asian region. It definitely helps to improve interaction and communication between the various organisations besides facilitating the dissemination of information among the AAAD members.

In this borderless cyber world, the website can also be a potentially useful educational tool for AAAD in the future. It can serve as a platform for members to have forums on clinical issues and even for lectures to be uploaded for the benefits of the members. The potential is immense and I hope the future AAAD Council can fully utilise it.

I am very pleased that this website project has finally come to fruition since we first broached the issue during the last AAAD Council Meeting in Bali in 2008. For this, I have to thank and congratulate Dr. Sushil Koirala who has worked tirelessly to complete the project.

Last but not least, I hope you will find the website informative & interesting. Happy surfing!
